Basement Tips for Reducing Moisture

Basements are fantastic for additional living space or storage. However, because they mostly are underground they have a tendency to attract moisture and dampness. The summer months have increased moisture in the air. It can be a struggle to keep the humidity and condensation level low. If your basement has high humidity levels, then you probably want it fixed quick.

Summer Dehumidifier Do’s

  • DO have your air conditioner running to help keep the air cool, especially the basement. Cold air contains a lot less moisture than warm air. When you run your air conditioner longer then it can help remove excess humidity in the basement. If you find that your basement still feels damp, then you can add a fan to the room to help circulate the air. You can also open doors or windows in the basement while running the air conditioning and fan to help air out the space.

  • DO install a dehumidifier. They do just that, help remove moisture from the space. If you have a drain in your basement, then you can run the dehumidifier hose to the drain so you don’t have to constantly empty it.

  • Whatever you do, DON’T turn on your heat. Adding heat to already humid air will increase the moisture in the air.

Dealing With Basement Moisture During The Summer

If you find you are still dealing with humidity issues in your basement after trying the tips above, then it might be time to call a professional. There could be water in the drain that is creating more moisture in the basement air, cracks in the foundation allowing water into the walls, or if you keep your washing machine in the basement then maybe that is leaking water. Some fixes can be done easily, and others should be done by a professional trained to complete the work. Hiring a basement waterproofing technician can help detect the source of the problem and recommend who can fix the it.

If you have an unfinished basement and are looking to remodel and turn it into an entertainment space, home gym, wine room, or a place where guests can stay, make sure to correct any moisture problems before you start remodeling the area.
